Since 1989 he has been a member of the Trusts and Estates Panel of the City Bar Association's Legal Referral Service. Lawyer Simon has frequently been appointed by the Surrogate's Court to serve as a guardian ad litem (attorney representative) for children and other vulnerable parties involved in legal proceedings before the Court.

Beyond his extensive professional experience as a lawyer, William A. Simon is an active member of several community organizations. His leadership qualities and his enjoyment of classical music have led him to serve as board member and current president of the Helicon Foundation, an organization devoted to classical chamber music. He is also the president of the cooperative apartment building in which he lives, a position which both utilizes and furthers his knowledge of co-ops.
